AboutMe

After 20 years in newsrooms I struck out on my own to write more about the things I'm most interested in and passionate about, including history, science and sports. But I'm pretty versatile. I spent more than a decade as a reporter for The Associated Press in Kentucky and Florida and then was executive editor of the online News Service of Florida for five years. During several years in Tallahassee I covered public policy, including science and health care policy and business and the economy. I've also covered several elections. I also wrote the book, literally, on the demographics of Florida, twice. Versions of the Political Almanac of Florida were published in 2014 and again, with updates, in 2015.  In my freelancing career I've also written for corporate clients.

I'm a proud graduate of The College of Wooster in Ohio, where I studied history and got my master's degree in journalism at the University of Missouri. But I started my college courses at my hometown University of Louisville and I'm an incurable UL Cardinals fan for life.

In my spare time I try to make room for coaching and playing soccer, and judo. I also enjoy travel, either for work or fun, and adventures like skiing and diving.  I live in Chicago with my wife, Jessi a researcher at DePaul University and my son.
